Frank Bodani - Legend of York County native Earl Shaffer remains strong on Trail

He was a simple-living man who became a national treasure.
The hiking community is still praising Shiloh native Earl V. Shaffer nearly three years after his death. In 1948, Shaffer became the first person to hike the entire Appalachian Trail in one steady journey, from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine.

Frank Bodani - Dave Donaldson bought the Shiloh house where hiking legend Earl Shaffer grew up.

"The man was tough," Donaldson said. "Earl was all knees and elbows, and Mount Katahdin is like a mile-high boulder pile. There were some days I saw him take some falls, and I thought for sure he broke his kneecap, but he never complained and just got up and kept walking."

Within a short time, we saw it off to our right and pulled over to take some pictures. The old stone monument read, "Appalachian Trail, Manada Gap, erected 1936 to honor Runkle Bro's., Trail Supervisors, Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club."
We were standing where an original section of the Appalachian Trail had been. It was also where Earl Shaffer hiked 60 years ago on his way north as the first ever Appalachian Trail thru-hiker.
